Plastic Material Selection for Injection Molded Parts

DESIGN GUIDE

Engineering explanation

Choose a resin by its required mechanical, thermal, chemical, cosmetic and regulatory performance—not by an unsupported factory-wide material list.

In brief: Choose a resin by its required mechanical, thermal, chemical, cosmetic and regulatory performance—not by an unsupported factory-wide material list.

Start with service conditions

Part operating temperature, impact loads, UV, detergents and electrical demands determine which data sheets are relevant.

A washing machine fascia and a load-bearing sliding guide need different material evidence; one resin cannot be promoted as optimal for all plastic parts.

Grade and compound matter

ABS, PC, PP, PA and POM are useful families in design discussions. Actual shrinkage and performance depend on fillers, modifiers, suppliers and processing.

Specify the exact commercial resin grade once selected, together with conditioning and material verification needs. A family name does not establish compliance or physical properties.

Validate the finished article

Paint, ink, printing or assembly adhesives can affect the selected substrate. Approve finish adhesion, colour and functional compatibility in the target configuration.

Medical equipment parts need an intended-use review. The brochure does not substantiate ISO 13485, sterility or biological safety claims.

Working review table

IssueDesign or procurement action
ABSEvaluate appearance, impact, heat and coating compatibility.
PCCheck operating heat, impact and chemical environment.
PPCompare chemical resistance, shrinkage and surface finishing needs.
PAAssess moisture conditioning and dimensional change.
POMAssess friction, wear and mating surface compatibility.

Before you send the RFQ

Document the current design revision, expected service conditions, the part receiving this component and who will approve samples. Discuss technical exceptions openly rather than burying them in a general note.

MOQ depends on part type and order value. New customers may request 1–5 samples where suitable. Mixed models are possible at around USD 1,500 total. Small 1–2-piece orders can cost more per piece. Indicative lead times: standard items 10–25 working days; custom parts 20–45; project equipment 45–120. EXW, FOB, CIF and DAP are common; FCA, CFR, CPT, CIP and DDP can be agreed case by case.
