Define the controlled reference
Critical-to-quality features should map to a valid drawing revision. ISO 20457:2026 provides a plastics-specific approach to tolerances, but the purchaser and manufacturer must define application-specific acceptance.
A part with a cosmetic face and flexible clips should have separate appearance and retention checks rather than a single generic pass/fail statement.
Define the measurement condition
Flexible polymer features may deform under probe force or clamp pressure. Agree temperature, conditioning, support and reference orientation.
Use appropriate gages and fixtures for actual assembly conditions. An inspection document should list equipment and uncertainty where relevant.
Record acceptance and change
A first article report is useful only when the tool revision, cavity and material are known. Cosmetic defects need a consistent light, viewing distance and sample standard.
Retain evidence of rework and deviation decisions. Later mould or resin changes may trigger renewed approvals.
Working review table
| Issue | Design or procurement action |
|---|---|
| Datum and feature | Function-critical interface definition and drawing ID. |
| Conditioning | Temperature, elapsed time and moisture when relevant. |
| Measurement method | Fixture, gage, support and frequency. |
| Appearance | Visible zone, reference, lighting and defect limits. |
| Release | Sign-off, cavity/tool revision and traceability. |

Before you send the RFQ
Document the current design revision, expected service conditions, the part receiving this component and who will approve samples. Discuss technical exceptions openly rather than burying them in a general note.
